Fitness Rules to Live By
Whether you’re trying to lose weight or maintain your current fitness level there are a few fitness rules that will help you reach your fitness goals.
Fitness Rule #1
Never miss a Monday.
Mondays can be hard enough, but not working out is going to set the tone for the rest of the week. It allows room for you to negotiate and make excuses why you don’t have time or energy to exercise for the rest of the week.
Then it makes it even harder to workout the following week and keep a consistent exercise habit. So whatever day is hardest for you to get a workout in, make sure you do some type of exercise. It takes 21 days to make a habit, and just a few lazy days to break it.
Pay attention to what you eat and when you eat.
This starts when you are out grocery shopping,
- Don’t go when you are hungry, because you are going to over-buy and spend more money on food you really don’t need to purchase. Not to mention you’ll probably be picking up snack foods (aka junk food)
- Pay attention to what you are you are putting in your shopping cart. Fill it with mostly fresh foods, instead of instant microwaveable meals, chips, greasy foods, cookies, etc. Because those easy grab and go foods are going to be what you end up munching on the most. But if you fill your house with fresh foods, it makes the decision very easy to eat healthy.
Now let’s talk about our common enemy. Sugar. It’s tastes amazing and it is super addictive. The more you eat it the more you will want it. Which is why I recommend filling your house with those healthy fresh foods. Because sugar is a slippery slope that will lead you down a path of laziness and body discomfort.
Be aware of when you are eating
Don’t eat, or snack late at night. Try to have a set time when you’re not going to snack anymore. I try not to eat after 8pm, but if I have to I try to just make it something small and light.
Otherwise, I end up feeling too full to sleep, and sluggish the next day.
It’s also important to recognize if you are eating because of hunger, or if you are eating because you are stressed, bored, sad, or any other emotion. If you are an emotional eater try changing your habits. Replace the bad habit of eating your emotions to something productive like exercising, going on a walk, or even painting. Find something you can do that will make you feel better instead of relying on “comfort food”.
Avoid over and undereating
If you can’t tell a huge tip in losing weight or maintaining your weight has to do with food. It is a huge factor in your fitness success. This goes back to rule #2 to pay attention to what you are putting in your body so you can better recognize when you are full, and stop eating.
It’s also important to not stress out about food and avoid it all together. If you aren’t eating then it will have detrimental effects on your body because if you starve yourself your body goes into panic mode, your metabolism will slow down and retain as many calories as possible to survive. Which is why weight gain is possible on restrictive diets, and habits.
Something that I love is keeping the perspective that you need to eat to be beautiful. Your skin, nails, and hair need vitamins from food, and beyond that you need other vitamins to keep the rest of your body functioning the way it should. You have to eat in order to have strength to work on your goals, to have energy to workout, in fact you have to eat in order to be happier (ever heard of the word “hangry”?)
Practicing intuitive eating is a way of living so that you can have peace with food and your body, and not feel stressed about overeating or even undereating.
Another key tip in avoiding overeating is to have a couple small meals each day, instead of just 2 or 3 big ones. Even making sure you eat a couple healthy snacks in between meals will prevent you from eating too much.
Drink lots of water. If you want to lose weight drink a full glass of water before you eat a meal. Also drink a glass of water before you go to bed and when you wake up. Doing this will help you metabolism get a kick start. As well drinking water throughout the day will help you not feel so hungry all the time. Hunger and thirst are often confused which is another reason why many people end up overeating.
Have something you look forward to when you workout
There are some days where the only thing that makes me excited about working out are the clothes I get to wear. Make sure you have some workout clothes that you love and that make you excited to get to the gym.
Here are just a couple of brands that I love. My favorite is probably Forever 21 because they always have an amazing price! And they’re the type of material I love, the kind where if you bend over you can’t see through the material…which is always a plus.
For your convenience I have added these clickable images so if you want to check out more styles you totally can! I do get a small commission if anything is purchase but it doesn’t change the cost of the product for you.
Make sure you are getting enough sleep
Sleep deprivation negatively affects both your mental clarity and your physical well being. If you are trying to exercise when you haven’t had enough sleep don’t be surprised if your performance level and motivation are next to none.
Last but not least, be kind to yourself, no one likes a bully. You’ve got to root for yourself to succeed instead of putting yourself down when you see things you don’t like about yourself, or something you want to change. Find the positive, embrace where you are and love yourself for it.
Don’t let the reason you stop or give up be because you don’t think you can do it, or you’re not good enough. Because you definitely are good enough and you deserve to have peace with yourself.
