How To Find Your Life Mantra
A mantra is used in meditation. It’s a word or a phrase that is repeated to help one focus. A life mantra is a reminder of how you want to live. I found mine through a difficult time in my life that pushed me to my limit. And I’m thankful for that, because I found an organic and incredibly profound way to live my life.
Here is a condensed version of my story, and how a life mantra can impact your life:
A few years ago I found my love for road biking. Exercise has always been a love of mine, plus riding a bike is incredibly freeing! At the time I was living out in the country where there wasn’t a ton of mountains or buildings…actually there wasn’t much of anything. So windy days were common thing and the wind was always fierce.
This one day in particular I was out in the middle of nowhere but of course I wanted to go further, I just wanted to ride, and be free. I wanted to forget everything that was happening in my life, and just ride to my heart’s content. But that wind was so strong and persistent. I was pedaling as hard as I could and wasn’t getting anywhere anytime soon. I was starting to give up I felt completely hopeless, defeated, and worthless. But not just in cycling, but in life. Needless to say amidst these 20 mph-ish winds I broke down.
I had my ugly moment of crying and sheer defeat.
I felt so small compared to everything in my life. I felt depression and the weight of the world pulling me down. Now whether you’re religious or not that’s okay, but I find peace in prayer. So after saying a silent prayer in my heart I decided I hated the feeling of being completely broken and that’s not the reason why we are alive. We weren’t born to fail or feel like we are nothing. We have so much potential, every one of us is of a divine nature. I then wanted to prove to myself that I am stronger than what happens to me, and I am stronger than the depression I was feeling.
I decided that I could bike in those furious winds, I could be just as strong as the winds are. I set a goal for where I was going to ride to, I brushed myself off got back on my bike. I rode with such vigor and strength, I felt renewed and powerful.
Then the wind would come at me with even more strength as though there was an actual force against me trying to make me feel like I am nothing, like I couldn’t achieve what I set out to do.
I kept telling myself to push harder and harder. I was relentless. I surpassed my goal and I felt like I had won in a small but meaningful way. I felt like no matter what, as long as I try again and again I will be successful. No matter how hard something is,
“When things get hard, push harder.”
Do this and you’ll make it through. But even more than that, you will surprise yourself at how strong and capable you are!!
I’ve used this mantra many many times in my life. And cannot adequately express how grateful I am for my hardships. Because of them I know how strong I can be if I just keep going, on top of that I am even stronger for going through those tough times. When life throws a punch, you gotta jump back up and punch it right back.
How have you found your life mantra? What gets you through the tough times, or even just your day to day life??
And if you don’t have one yet here are a couple ways you can find your life mantra:
Write a list of your favorite qualities, and the qualities you want to work on. A mantra is a repeated reminder, so if you want to be happier then you might find a good mantra along the lines of, “Just keep smiling.” …”Positive mind. Positive life.”…Or if you’re a worrier, “Everything has a purpose and will workout in the end” my favorite as a kid was, “Don’t sweat the small stuff“.
Just keep writing and reflecting until you find something that Really inspires you.
Another technique is to think of the things you are passionate about. Ask yourself why, and what got you started. What is your story and what drives you to continue on the path you’re on? And if you’re not on the path you want to be on, how can you get there? What do you need to do?
That is the whole purpose of a life mantra, is to remind you to live your best life possible!
Please share a comment of your experiences your thoughts ideas, what’s helped you find your life mantra. And if you have one I’d love to hear it!!
